Classy and ethereal Viognier can be an elusive thi Classy and ethereal Viognier can be an elusive thing, but that’s exactly what this 2024 Brick Barn Viognier is all about. In many parts of California, Viognier as a varietal wine can be truly too generous—perfumed like five pumps of Love Spell, textured like oil—yet stingy with acidity, of all things.Just east of the Sta. Rita Hills and centered in the east-west wind corridor, Brick Barn is a cool spot to grow Viognier. That gives it an uncommon fresh edge, with acidity levels that mirror Chardonnay in our region. The gentle ripening here also gives the wine an airy and enticing spread of aromas, pulling you in rather than pushing you back. Still, it’s vividly Viognier in a way that any aspiring Somm would love to find on their blind tasting exam.
Even just months after bottling, this 2023 Chardon Even just months after bottling, this 2023 Chardonnay from Rancho Ontiveros already impresses with complexity and earthy poise. That’s partly due to a very cool vintage, but also a result of the way this wine challenged us in the cellar. Toward the end of fermentation, the native yeasts that were fermenting the wine bogged down, and it took an extra 7 months of barrel aging to finish fermenting the wine dry. That extra time in barrel shaped the wine in a way that we’re totally enamored with. The grapes we get from Rancho Ontiveros are the Wente clone of Chardonnay, a low-yielding clone that tends to be tropical and rich. The nice thing with extended aging is that fruitiness recedes and reveals a gorgeous sense of earthiness, creaminess, and minerality. So even in its youth, the wine already carries the complexity of an aged wine while staying fresh and full of verve.
Meet The Ojai Vineyard’s debut bottling of Picpo Meet The Ojai Vineyard’s debut bottling of Picpoul—our 2024 Nolan Ranch Picpoul. If you’re unfamiliar, Picpoul is an obscure sun-loving grape from the South of France. It is known for being a crisp, high-acid counterpoint for blending with the richer, weightier white varieties of the Southern Rhone (like Viognier, Roussanne, etc). In the Languedoc’s town of Pinet, it’s bottled as a varietal wine that is lemony and direct— often dubbed an “oyster wine.”With those humble origins, this Picpoul defies expectations with an uncommonly layered and textured appeal. That’s a product of Californian sunshine, which tends to bring a richer tilt to this grape, but also our more Burgundian approach to winemaking. Instead of using stainless steel to preserve its crisp edge, we used neutral French oak to ferment and age this wine (like all our whites). This provides breadth and richness that you can’t usually find in Picpoul.
