New wine spotlight: 2023 Portico Hill SyrahPortico Hills Vineyard sits just north of the charming town of Los Alamos in Santa Barbara County (you can actually see it from the highway – look out for the sign!), set on rolling hills with sandy-loam and limestone-tinged soils that offer excellent drainage and heat retention. Its varied slopes and sweeping diurnal shifts help grapes develop vibrant aromatics, balanced ripeness, and site-specific character—qualities that come through beautifully in the vineyard’s expressive Syrah.Jeb Dunnuck, known for his deep coverage of Rhône varieties across Europe, California, and Washington, called the 2023 Syrah from Portico Hills a “classy, complex, Saint-Joseph-like Syrah” and noted it will drink beautifully from 2025–2037.”
