Some say there are no secrets to wine-making. But why some vineyards can produce truly prodigious wines while others merely good ones is a mystery. Some vineyards are intrinsically special and such is the Pisoni Vineyard. It's fitting that Gary, who is a raging Burgandiaphile, has created a vineyard with a unique 'Pisoni terrior'. In our cellar, the wine is always identifiable by its exuberant aroma of mixed red and black raspberries. The 1997 is not as luxurious and palatial as the 1996, but it is unquestionably lush and generous. The 1997 is more pinot-like in weight and body and has all the glorious aromatic qualities that made the 1996 so extraordinary. Because it is so approachable and delicious, I personally prefer this one -- it's great!
