Upper Ojai, Ventura County
Our second release of barbera comes from the warm upper reaches of Ojai Valley, and it’s just an explosive wine! Barbera is a unique grape in that it tenaciously holds onto acidity even when grown in heat, and provides vibrant fruity flavors and deep color in regions where other grapes would suffer from the heat and not color fully. It’s hearty in that sense, but is too often grown and made to be innocuous.
But boy, this barbera is anything but innocuous! It’s a bold, brash and delicious wine. The signature acidity of this grape is flashy in a core with bright fruity flavors of pomegranate and blood orange, which is swaddled up with sweeter, more succulent dark cherry and blueberry. It’s aromatically fruit-focused too, with appealing streaks of floral and herbal fragrances. It’s a refreshing joy to drink—with a slight chill it’s just perfect for the dog days of summer.

“Ojai’s 2015 Barbera Rich Vineyard is plump, juicy and forward – in other words, exactly what Barbera is supposed to be. Inky red and purplish-hued stone fruit, spice, leather, mint and lavender flesh out in a supple, midweight Barbera loaded with personality. The 60% whole clusters are not especially perceptible in the wine’s flavor profile, although they are a bit more evident texturally” – AG 92 points

“I was very impressed by the 2015 Barbera Rich Vineyard, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with a generous bouquet of black cherry, balsamic reduction and plum preserve. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, layered and velvety, with the bright acids typical of this variety underpinning a lavish core of dark fruit.2018-2026”- William Kelley 92 Points
“Coming from a site in the upper part of Ojai, just next to Roll Ranch, the 2015 Barbara Rich Vineyard has a terrific nose of blackberry, cassis, peppery herbs and violets. The palate shows medium-bodied richness, a plump, rounded texture, and beautiful freshness throughout. It’s a charming beauty that leads with its fruit.”- JD 90 Points
