This is serious stuff! And over the last few vintages the wines from this vineyard have only gotten better. There is so much of interest in the raw material here at Fe Ciega. It has the acidity that is needed for good balance and it possesses a unique vineyard personality that is intriguing. While it is always fruit filled, it is not particularly fruity—this is a wine that speaks of its earthy origins. Paying attention to what the vineyard gives has enabled me to fine tune the winemaking to get the most out of this site. In 2009 we received our usual parcels of three different clones of pinot noir: Dijon clones 115, 667 and heritage clone “Pommard”. The weather during the growing season gave us generous, easy going pinots and Fe Ciega was no exception. However, the Pommard clone there was fresher and more focused, so we bottled a three barrel lot of it and gave it our “Special Bottling” designation. There were only 57 cases produced.

Blend: 100% Pinot Noir Pommard Clone | Alcohol: 14.0% | Vinification: 100% Neutral French Oak | Barrel Aging: 15 Months | Total Production: 57 cases

Antonio Galloni’s Vinous

“Ojai’s 2009 Pinot Noir Fe Ciega Special Bottling is a selection of three barrels, all juice from Pommard clones. The wine wraps around the palate with deep layers of fruit. Hints of tobacco, earthiness and tar develop in the glass, adding complexity. This is an especially virile, intense Pinot. It is quite a bit different than the regular Fe Ciega in terms of its personality, but not that different from a pure qualitative perspective.” – AG 93 Points
